Case Study:
Urgent Server Implementation for Nationwide Car-Rental
Agency
Background:
A nationwide car rental agency had an urgent problem as
their server, running the application for hiring out their
rentals, had become unstable under load. The application
was accessed via terminal services and utilised a database
on the same machine. Their only IT employee was overseas
on holiday. They had already purchased a second server
prior to experiencing any problems, with a view to replace
the existing server.
Requirement:
Build the new server and make it operational over the
course of a weekend to ensure minimum downtime and lost
productivity.
Solution:
The original server was disconnected from the network
and was used, in place of lack of documentation, to determine
the required configuration. The new server was built and
configured with some improvements. The database was restored
and configured while working in conjunction with the database
developer. All client machines connectivity to the new
server were tested and confirmed prior to completing the
job. The job was documented in full on completion for the
benefit of the returning IT employee.
